Removing unwanted body and facial hair through shaving, waxing, or tweezing is a tedious chore. In Santa Fe’s hot weather unwanted hair can be unbearable. So, why not do away with it permanently with laser hair removal at Sterling Aesthetics.
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. It uses the highly concentrated light of a laser to destroy the hair. How? The dark pigment in the hair absorbs the energy from the laser light and this damages the follicle, preventing future hair from growing.

Sterling Aesthetic’s treatment is precise as the laser only targets dark, coarse hairs and does not damage the surrounding skin. Every laser pulse takes less than second and numerous hairs can be treated simultaneously. The majority of our patients experience permanent hair reduction after three to seven appointments. Repeated treatments are necessary because every hair can be in a different part of the growth cycle and this can affect the procedure’s effectiveness.
Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
Laser hair removal is very effective but permanent hair removal depends on hair color, skin color, and the strength of the laser treatment as tolerated by the patient. Single hairs will be permanently removed if the follicle is destroyed. That single follicle will not regrow and the remaining hairs should be more fine, thin, and lighter in color.
Additionally, over time, your body will develop new hair follicles, so new hair growth will occur. This is why it’s recommended that after the initial 6 treatments, you undergo maintenance treatments every 4-6 months so that new hairs are targeted.
How do I prepare for laser hair removal?
While the procedure seems simple, laser hair removal should only be done by a qualified professional. Our staff at Sterling Aesthetics is thoroughly experienced in the procedure.
When preparing for your appointment, patients need to stop waxing, plucking, and electrolysis for six weeks prior to the treatment — the laser targets the hair roots and these methods can temporarily remove hair. It is also important to limit your sun exposure on the treatment areas for six weeks before and after the procedure. Sun exposure can make the procedure less effective and increase the likelihood of complications after treatment.
What happens during laser hair removal?
Before the laser hair removal procedure, your hair that will undergo treatment will be trimmed. The laser equipment will also be adjusted based on your skin thickness and color. The skin’s outer layers are protected by applying a cold gel or by using a special cooling device. This also helps the light penetrate the skin. Next, a pulse of laser light will be directed at the treatment area. The area will be examined for a couple of minutes to ensure that the best settings were utilized and to assess for any adverse reactions.
After the treatment, ice packs, anti-inflammatory medications, and cold water may be provided to relieve any discomfort. Your next appointment will be scheduled four to six weeks later.
What can I expect during my recovery from laser hair removal?
The treated area will look and feel sunburned. Moisturizer and cold compresses will help ease any discomfort. If your face was treated, makeup can be worn the following day unless there are blisters on your skin. Treated hair will continue to fall out over the next month. During this time, it is important to wear sunscreen to avoid any temporary changes in skin color.
People who have darker complexions are more likely to have blisters as the skin color attracts more of the laser energy. Redness, swelling, and scarring may also be present after the procedure. Other possible complications include permanent skin color changes or scarring, but these are rare. Contact us directly to discover the cost of laser hair removal.
